2 Point (Double Ended) Knitting Needles
Double-ended needles are pointed at both ends which allows them to be used from either end. These have been most commonly used to knit smaller tube-shaped pieces such as sleeves, collars, and socks. These pins are used in sets of four or five. The short pins are used for socks, gloves and hats. The longer pins are necessary for adult size sweaters.
Circular Knitting Needles
Circular knitting pins has two pointed shanks joined by a long flexible cord. The cord is strong and smooth and allows the weight of the work to rest on the lap rather than on the needles. There is less strain on the hands and wrists as the circular pin cord accommodate a large number of the stitches.
Are used with very fine yarns, cotton, silk and fine wool to crochet.
Knobbed Knitting Needles
The most widely recognized form of knitting needle is the knobbed needle or the single-pointed needle. These are straight needles tapered to a point at one end and a knob at the other end to prevent stitches from slipping off. Such needles are always used in pairs.
